It’s in English! It’s a miracle… nah, it’s just old crap. In Kastpod numero 9, that was originally published on July 25, 2005 I yap about a UK conference called Podcast Con (as in Conference, not Convict or Con Artist). I also menstion the long since defunct podsafeaudio.com and my buddy from that web site (who I am still friends with I might add) Justin… This was also one of the longest episodes of my old podcast ever. You have been duly notified!

THIS ONE IS IN DUTCH – Stef Boonstoppel has been living in Australia for 7 years. Sometimes he misses the typical “gezelligheid” of a Dutch pub. Especially now, during the European Championship Soccer. Or as the Dutch call it by it’s proper name… Football! Only an idiot calls a sport where you are allowed to touch the ball with your hands football… But I digress. So, what do you do if you have a hunkering for watching soccer with some other Dutch people? You build a pub in your living room and then use Facebook to invite people to come watch the tournament with you. Because of the time difference you will have to get up EARLY to catch the 5 AM games. But Stef has the beer, the frikandellen and the bitterballen ready for you! This one aired on SBS on the 19th of June 2021.

THIS ONE IS IN DUTCH AND ALSO IN ENGLISH – You see, the story of one of Australia’s largest sausage manufacturers begins in the Netherlands. Hans van der Drift tried to escape being in the army (draft was still a thing back then) AND having to work for his dad on the weekends in the family’s pastry business. So he moved to Australia. It wasn’t any easier, but at least he was working for himself. Because he couldn’t get his Dutch pastries sold in Brisbane he started (mostly by accident) to make sausages. The already established smallgoods manufacturers didn’t like it much and that made Hans want to succeed in the industry even more! Soon Hans had the largest smallgoods operation in the country and when his Australian-born son was old enough he joined father Hans. Antony now owns his own smallgoods business, and they sell ROOKWORST! IN AUSTRALIA! And that’s why this interview is in two languages.  It’s been a while since you have seen updates from me here… Not because I haven’t been making radio, (this one aired on SBS on April 17, 2021) but between interviewing people and my day-job, sometimes it’s hard to find time to update the podcast. I’ll be better – I promise.

TULSA 66

Tulsa Police could not do their work without the help of the people that talk to the public and coordinate the efforts of the officers in the cars, on the streets… You know tell them where to go (and sometimes, we imagine, where to stick it). In this short episode, a dispatcher is at the end of her rope trying to explain to a patrol officer where the action is. Her description of the ambulance that the police officer on the street is sure to find once he gets even remotely close to where he needs to be, is PRICELESS! *** This episode originally was published in May of 2007

A sound-seeing trip in Omaha (Nebraska), a new voice mail hotline phone number (don’t try to call it, it’s defunct). music, historical sounds… Woot! This was originally published on July 18, 2005 and it hasn’t gotten better with age.

Andy & Erica

THIS ONE IS IN DUTCH – Earlier this year, Andrew didn’t come home from a fishing trip. For an experienced sailor and fisherman (as well as a boat builder) who knew the ins and out of the far north Queensland waterways this was highly unusual. After much antagonizing Erica, Andrew’s Dutch spouse, who had been sailing, living on the water with Andrew for the last 15 or so years sounded the alarm. After an extensive search, the couple’s small fishing boat was found, upside down among the mangroves, heavily damaged. Andrew had fallen victim to a saltwater crocodile measuring 4.5 meters in length. In this interview Erica recalls the harrowing experience, talks about the beauty of nature and life on the water. This interview originally aired on SBS Dutch on March 6, 2021

I had the honour of attending a virtual press conference / presso by the QLD Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Young. She updated us on the vaccination efforts in QLD. We are a bit behind actually, but I didn’t know that at the time…  Our head-med-honcho is possitive though that we can do this… I cut down her hour long talk to about 10 minutes. Take the vaccine, even if you are healthy. The thing is safe. Also, it’s free! If people ask for money they are scammers. Phase 1a is underway… That’s pretty much the message. Oh, there is some Dutch, but not a lot, in there.

This previously aired on 4EB (in 2 parts) and will again this Sunday (in one big hit) because this message is THAT important.

TULSA 66

This has to be my all time favorite episode of the Tulsa Police Street Stories Podcast. It’s also the episode, that sort of got us in trouble. It doesn’t put the cops, victims and perps involved – and indeed the city of Tulsa – in a particularly good light. But man, is this story funny. It has all the makings of an episode Law & Order, thugs, hookers, Johns, stolen cars, tow trucks… but with a comedic twist. Get ready to relive the antics of officer Jay and his dealings with disease-riddled prostitutes and midget sized gang members with afros the size of a wagon wheel (I am making this up as I go) peddling around on a toddler bike. This one originally hit the streets on April 24, 2007.

THIS ONE IS IN DUTCH – Brisbane (waar ik woon) zit weer eens in lockdown. Nou be deze dus!

This was originally recorded on July 11, 2005 and published the next day. In this show all the music is from a Dutch art collective called Skipper Boetlek. I have no clue if they still exist… I could ask Ndromeda (one of the artists you will hear in this episode) as I am still friends on FB, but instead I am going to leave it to you to find out. One of the bands I am playing in this episode is still going strong for sure. Google Jack Molton Distortion! One of the bizarro things about this episode was that it was featured on a CD. In hindsight that seems odd to me that we were all working on making music and other forms of art more accessible and therefore use CD as the distribution mechanism, but in 2005 the internet wasn’t nearly the ubiquitous thing it is now. Anyway… Enjoy!
